In the Twentieth Anniversary issue of Offbeat Magazine (November 2007), Astral Project was recognized as one the top twenty artists "who mattered most in the last twenty years:

"Astral Project: Over the last 20 years, Astral Project has been the best jazz ensemble in New Orleans and is recognized as one of the finest modern jazz combo in the country. The band is entering its 30th year together next year, and it has been a launch pad rather than a prison, wit each member playing important roles in the community individually as well as in the group. The ubiquitous drummer Jonny Vidacovich has a regular Maple Leaf gig as part of the The Trio with bassist George Porter Jr. and a different guest each week. guitarist Steve Masakowski is an endowed chair in UNO's jazz studies program, and Tony Dagradi teaches at Loyola while playing with the New Orleans Saxophone Quartet. bassist James Singleton has played everything from trad jazz to experimental jazz with 3Now 4 and its various offshoots. The band has a finger in almost every jazz pot in the city."
